About Kramer International Law

Kramer International Law was formed based on its founder's vision to create a firm that focuses on the complex field of international law.

International law is defined in several different ways. For the purpose of what our firm does, we define something as concerning international law where at least one international element is involved in a transaction, case or dispute.

This is not to say that we never handle domestic-only matters; we do in the right circumstances, but international matters are what we seek and believe we are uniquely suited to handle.

The firm's founder, Randy S. Kramer, has been a lawyer for nearly 20 years and is licensed to practice law in four countries: the US, Canada, England and Wales. Ever since he was in law school, Randy has had a passion for international law and dreamed of opening his own practice based on that.

This puts our firm in the unique position of being able to examine and resolve legal matters with a genuinely international perspective.

When it comes to international law, there are significant differences between jurisdictions that follow the common law (which originated in England) and those that follow the civil law (which originated in France and Italy). In fact, most countries in the world use civil law systems.

Even though civil law is so widespread internationally, most lawyers trained in the common law do not learn the complexities of the civil law and how it substantially differs from the common law.

Randy, on the other hand, is a fully qualified civil law lawyer. He received a B.C.L. in Civil Law from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Then he became a member of the Barreau du Québec (the province of Quebec is a civil law jurisdiction despite the rest of Canada following the common law). He also received a J.D. from McGill University, a common law degree.

The best way to navigate the labyrinth of international law is to fully understand both common law and civil law as we do.

It is highly recommended that one be fluent in more than one language when practicing international law. Randy is fluent in both English and French.

It is crucial in the practice of international law to be aware that people in certain other parts of the world have different cultures and ways of doing things. The highly effective international lawyer is sensitive to this, takes the time to understand it, and modifies his or her approach accordingly.

At Kramer International Law, we take the time necessary to ensure that we get to know you and your objectives well so that we can do the best possible job for you.

Whatever your international law issue, however big or small, we will make sure that it is attended to as rapidly, thoroughly and effectively as possible.
